How to Calculate CGPA and Convert to 4.0 GPA

CGPA conversion to the US 4.0 scale uses a proportional formula: divide your CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA on your scale, then multiply by 4.0. A CGPA of 8.5 on a 10-point scale equals 8.5 ÷ 10 × 4.0 = 3.40 GPA.

Formula: US GPA = (Your CGPA ÷ Max Scale) × 4.0
10-point scale: Multiply CGPA by 0.40 (e.g., 8.0 × 0.40 = 3.20)
9-point scale: Multiply CGPA by 0.444 (e.g., 8.0 × 0.444 = 3.56)

Use the converter on the right to enter your CGPA and select your scale. The result shows the equivalent US 4.0 GPA and letter grade. For formal applications, use a WES or NACES credential evaluation instead of a direct conversion.

CGPA Systems Around the World and US Graduate School Requirements

CGPA grading systems vary significantly across countries. Understanding how your country's CGPA maps to the US 4.0 scale is essential for international graduate school applications. For semester-level conversions, use the SGPA Calculator.

Indian University CGPA Systems

Indian universities primarily use the 10-point CGPA scale following University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines introduced in 2012. Under the UGC system: O (Outstanding) = 10 grade points, A+ (Excellent) = 9, A (Very Good) = 8, B+ (Good) = 7, B (Above Average) = 6, C (Average) = 5, P (Pass) = 4. Some universities still use older 7-point or 5-point scales. Anna University, Mumbai University, and Pune University each use slightly different CGPA scales, making direct comparison difficult.

The IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) use a 10-point CGPA scale. An IIT CGPA of 8.0+ is considered excellent and typically converts to 3.2+ on the US 4.0 scale, which is competitive for US graduate school admission.

MS Engineering (Mid-tier)

CGPA: 9.0+ / GPA: 3.6+

Formal Credential Evaluation vs Direct Conversion

Many US universities require a formal credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency (like WES, ECE, or SpanTran) for international applicants. These agencies review the full transcript, grading system, and institution accreditation before assigning an equivalent US GPA. The evaluated GPA may differ from the direct proportional conversion because the agency accounts for grade distribution, institutional standards, and course-level rigor.

Use the converter on this page for a quick reference estimate. For formal applications to US graduate programs, confirm whether the school requires a WES or NACES evaluation if so, the calculator result is informational only.

Worked Example: Calculating CGPA Across Semesters

A student with four semesters of differing SGPA values and credit loads earns a cumulative CGPA of 8.27 on the 10-point scale, equivalent to approximately 3.31 US GPA.

SemesterSGPACreditsWeighted Points
Semester 18.220164.0
Semester 27.818140.4
Semester 38.622189.2
Semester 48.420168.0
Totals80661.6
CGPA = 661.6 ÷ 80 = 8.27 (US GPA ≈ 8.27 × 0.4 = 3.31)

The US GPA equivalent uses the proportional formula: 8.27 ÷ 10 × 4.0 = 3.31. This meets the 3.0 minimum for most US MS programs and approaches the 3.4 threshold for competitive programs. Semester 3 produced the highest SGPA (8.6) because its 22-credit load carries the most weight in the cumulative calculation.
