How to Calculate CGPA and Convert to 4.0 GPA
CGPA conversion to the US 4.0 scale uses a proportional formula: divide your CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA on your scale, then multiply by 4.0. A CGPA of 8.5 on a 10-point scale equals 8.5 ÷ 10 × 4.0 = 3.40 GPA.
10-point scale: Multiply CGPA by 0.40 (e.g., 8.0 × 0.40 = 3.20)
9-point scale: Multiply CGPA by 0.444 (e.g., 8.0 × 0.444 = 3.56)

Indian University CGPA Systems
Indian universities primarily use the 10-point CGPA scale following University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines introduced in 2012. Under the UGC system: O (Outstanding) = 10 grade points, A+ (Excellent) = 9, A (Very Good) = 8, B+ (Good) = 7, B (Above Average) = 6, C (Average) = 5, P (Pass) = 4. Some universities still use older 7-point or 5-point scales. Anna University, Mumbai University, and Pune University each use slightly different CGPA scales, making direct comparison difficult.
The IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) use a 10-point CGPA scale. An IIT CGPA of 8.0+ is considered excellent and typically converts to 3.2+ on the US 4.0 scale, which is competitive for US graduate school admission.
