How to Convert Percentage to GPA
Percentage to GPA conversion uses a two-step process: first convert the percentage to a letter grade using the standard percentage range table, then convert the letter grade to the 4.0 grade point value.
The conversion is not a direct mathematical formula because letter grade cutoffs are defined by institutional policy, not by a continuous percentage scale. A 90% at one school earns an A, while another school requires 93% for an A. The standard US grading scale uses the ranges in the reference table below.
Example: 73% → C (73% falls in the 73–76% range) → 2.0 on the 4.0 scale
Complete Percentage to GPA Conversion Table
The standard US percentage-to-GPA conversion uses fixed ranges for each letter grade. A 97% and a 100% both earn an A+, which maps to 4.0 on the unweighted scale.
| Percentage Range | Letter Grade | 4.0 GPA Value | Classification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 97–100% | A+ | 4.0 | Exceptional |
| 93–96% | A | 4.0 | Excellent |
| 90–92% | A- | 3.7 | Excellent |
| 87–89% | B+ | 3.3 | Very Good |
| 83–86% | B | 3.0 | Good |
| 80–82% | B- | 2.7 | Good |
| 77–79% | C+ | 2.3 | Average |
| 73–76% | C | 2.0 | Average |
| 70–72% | C- | 1.7 | Below Average |
| 67–69% | D+ | 1.3 | Poor |
| 63–66% | D | 1.0 | Poor |
| 60–62% | D- | 0.7 | Barely Passing |
| Below 60% | F | 0.0 | Failing |
Percentage Grading: US vs International Systems
US percentage grading cutoffs differ significantly from international systems. A student transferring grades from an international school to a US institution will need to use the correct conversion for their country's grading scale. For Indian university grades, see the Indian GPA Calculator.
US Standard Percentage Scale
The US system uses 93% as the minimum for a full A and 90% for A-. This means a student who earns 91% on a US exam earns an A- worth 3.7 grade points not a full A. Many international students are surprised to learn that 90% in the US earns only a 3.7, not a 4.0, on the 4.0 scale.
Indian Percentage System (10-Point CGPA)
Indian universities use CGPA on a 10-point scale or direct percentage scores. A percentage above 75% is typically First Class with Distinction; 60–74% is First Class; 50–59% is Second Class. These cutoffs do not align with US letter grades. A 75% from an Indian university may convert to a B or B+ when evaluated by US graduate school admissions offices or credential evaluation services like WES.
UK Percentage Classification System
UK universities use percentage grades that map to degree classifications: 70% or above earns a First Class Honours (equivalent to an A in the US), 60–69% earns an Upper Second (2:1, roughly B equivalent), 50–59% earns a Lower Second (2:2, roughly C+ equivalent), and 40–49% earns a Third Class. A UK student with 65% may be confused to learn this converts to approximately a 3.0 GPA in the US system.
Simple 10-Point Percentage Scale (No Plus/Minus)
Some US schools and many international programs use a simple 10-point scale without plus/minus grades: 90–100% = A (4.0), 80–89% = B (3.0), 70–79% = C (2.0), 60–69% = D (1.0), below 60% = F (0.0). Students at these schools should use only the whole-letter grade values when calculating GPA an 88% earns a B (3.0), not a B+ (3.3).
Worked Example: Percentage to GPA Conversion
A student with percentage marks between 79% and 96% maps to letter grades that produce a 3.38 GPA on the 4.0 scale.
| Subject | Percentage | Letter Grade | Grade Pts | Quality Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| English | 88% | B+ | 3.3 | 9.9 |
| Chemistry | 92% | A- | 3.7 | 11.1 |
| Mathematics | 96% | A | 4.0 | 16.0 |
| Biology | 79% | C+ | 2.3 | 6.9 |
