What Is SGPA and How Is It Calculated?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures your academic performance for a single semester on the Indian 10-point scale. It is calculated by multiplying each subject's grade point by its credit hours, summing all weighted grade points, and dividing by the total credit hours for that semester.
Example: Subject A (O grade = 10, 4 credits) + Subject B (A+ = 9, 3 credits) + Subject C (A = 8, 3 credits)
SGPA = (10×4 + 9×3 + 8×3) ÷ (4+3+3) = (40 + 27 + 24) ÷ 10 = 9.1
Use the calculator on the right to enter each subject's grade and credits. The calculator computes your SGPA automatically. For Indian grading, select the grade point that matches your university's letter-to-point mapping common mappings follow the UGC 10-point scale.
Indian University Grading System: 10-Point Scale
Most Indian universities follow the UGC-recommended 10-point grading scale introduced in 2012. Letter grades map to grade points as follows, though some universities use slightly different mappings.
| Letter Grade | Grade Point | Descriptor | Percentage (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | Outstanding | 90-100% |
| A+ | 9 | Excellent | 80-89% |
| A | 8 | Very Good | 70-79% |
| B+ | 7 | Good | 60-69% |
| B | 6 | Above Average | 55-59% |
| C | 5 | Average | 50-54% |
| P | 4 | Pass | 45-49% |
| F | 0 | Fail | Below 45% |
SGPA to Percentage and CGPA Conversion
SGPA on the 10-point scale converts to percentage and cumulative GPA (CGPA) using standard formulas. The UGC-recommended percentage conversion uses a multiplier of 9.5. For a full US 4.0 equivalent, see the International GPA Calculator.
Converting SGPA to Percentage
The UGC guideline for converting SGPA to percentage is: Percentage = SGPA × 9.5. An SGPA of 8.0 equals 76%, and an SGPA of 9.0 equals 85.5%. Some universities use different multipliers VTU uses a formula that adds a fixed number before multiplying, and Anna University has its own conversion table. Use the UGC formula as the default; confirm with your university registrar for official conversions.
How SGPA Feeds Into CGPA
CGPA is the weighted average of all semester SGPAs, typically weighted by total credits earned in each semester. If semesters have equal credit loads, CGPA is the simple average of all SGPAs. A strong performance in your final two semesters can meaningfully raise your CGPA if earlier semesters were weaker, since the higher credit-weighted SGPAs pull up the cumulative average.
What SGPA Range Means for Careers and Graduate School
For campus placements, most top-tier companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture) require a CGPA or SGPA of at least 6.0. Product companies (Google, Amazon, Microsoft) typically require 7.0 or above. For US MS programs, a CGPA of 7.5 or above (approximately 3.0 US GPA) is the common minimum, while top programs expect 8.5 or above (approximately 3.4 US GPA).
Converting SGPA to US GPA for Grad School Applications
Use the proportional formula: US GPA = (SGPA ÷ 10) × 4.0. An SGPA of 8.5 converts to 3.4 US GPA. This is a direct estimate. WES and other credential evaluation services may assign a different value based on your specific university's grading distribution and national standards. For formal graduate school applications that require official evaluation, use WES rather than relying solely on this calculator.
